_ History of Nike

 Origin

 

 Nike is the name of the Greek Goddess of Victory. The Blue Ribbon Sports BRS company was founded in 1964. The company which was distributing shoes manufactured by Onitsuka Tiger, a Japanese company, launched its own shoe-line in the summer of 1971 named Nike.  Founders

 Philip Knight, a sportsman from the University of Oregon and his coach Bill Bowerman founded the BRS company/Blue Ribbon Sports was founded by Bill Bowerman and his student Philip Knight, an athlete from the University of Oregon. With the expiry of their contract with Onitsuka Tiger, they planned to launch their own shoes and sporting accessories under the brand name Nike.

 Swoosh Logo

 The logo of Nike called the Swoosh, represents the wing of the Greek goddess of victory, Nike. Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at the Portland State University designed the Nike logo. She did freelance work for Blue Ribbon SportsBRS

 Products

 Nike's diverse range of shoes for all types of sports and physical activities is universally known. Now, Nike also manufactures other apparel and accessories like jerseys, shorts etc. Today in fact, Nike apparels are part of the hip fashion and the youth consider their new releases to be the in thing to flaunt. Nike sources its products from manufacturing units located in almost 45 countries. It has a pan-global reach and revenues of $19 billions.

 Endorsements and sponsorships

 Like every other major brand, Nike has been promoting many champion athletes and sports persons as part of the advertising and publicity campaigns. The first person to endorse Nike was Bill Bowerman's champion disciple, the long distance athlete Steve Prefontaine.
