The Toyota Camry is a series of mid-size (originally compact) cars manufactured by Toyota since 1980. It is being sold in the majority of automotive markets all over the world. The Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car for the past eight consecutive years in the United States. With the exception of the sports-oriented versions, most models of the Camry are seen as less sporty than similar vehicles of other brands due to their comfort-tuned suspensions. The first time the Camry name was used was in 1980 when Toyota launched the Celica Camry (a four-doored Celica) for the Japanes domestic market. The V20 model was introduced in 1986. Its introduction saw the demise of the hatchback variety and the emergence of the station wagon. It was, however, still regarded as a compact car. The Camry V30 was introduced in July 1990 and was sold exclusively to the Japanese market. A Camry XV10, which was a widened version of the V30, was produced instead for the international market. The V30 was followed by the V40 in 1994 and was manufactured by Toyota up to 1998. Again, like the V30, the V40 was produced and sold exclusively for the Japanese market. Toyota updated the V40 in June 1996 making anti-lock brakes and dual air bags standard equipment. In December of that year, Toyota launched the XV20 (also in Japan) as a sedan and station wagon. It was later launched in the U.S. for the 1997 model year. The Japanese market Camry and international Camry eventually became in-line with each other after 1998, with the Toyota Vista taking over the V30 and V40 Camry roles. The 2002 Toyota Camry (XV30) was released as a larger sedan in 2001. This was followed by the Camry XV40 which was introduced at the North American International Auto Show in 2006. It first went on sale in March 2006 for the 2007 model year and it is the version that is currently being produced.
